Acetaminophen Found In Other Compounds

We do only only find acetaminophen in Tylenol variations where it can be combined with other substances, such as codeine. Acetaminophen is a widely used active ingredient found in a number of other drugs, too.

The Top 3 of them can be listed as follows: Darvocet, Percocet and Vicodin.

In Darvocet, acetaminophen is combined with propoxyphene. In Percocet, with oxycodone. In Vicodin, with hydrocodone. In each case, acetaminophen is combined with an opioid analgetic, a mild narcotic pain reliever, increasing its effects and in this way relieving pain better without making the dose of an opioid higher.

Tylenol 4

Tylenol 4 is a compound analgetic that consists of 60mg codeine phosphate and 300mg acetaminophen (paracetamol). It is also often called Tylenol 4 with codeine. The amount of codeine is doubled each time we go from Tylenol #1 to Tylenol #4. In Tylenol 1, it is only 8mg, then 15mg in Tylenol 2, 30mg in Tylenol 3, and finally, 60mg in Tylenol 4. The amount of acetaminophen is 300mg in each preparation. In the USA, Tylenol products contain no caffeine. But Tylenol #2 and #3 manufactured in Canada contain 15mg caffeine each, too. However, Tylenol 4 is just a mixture of 60mg codeine and 300mg acetaminophen (together with some inactive components, of course).

Tylenol 2

Tylenol 2 is only different from Tylenol 1 in the amount of codeine, which is 15mg (almost twice as much as in Tylenol 1). There is no difference in the amount of acetaminophen (300mg in both preparations). In the UK the medication is known as Solpadeine, and in Australia - as Panadeine 15. Tylenol 2 manufactured in Canada also contains 15mg caffeine.

Tylenol 1

Tylenol 1 is a compound analgetic that consists of 8mg codeine phosphate and 300mg acetaminophen (paracetamol). As compared to Tylenol #2, 3, and 4, this formulation has the least amount of codeine, though the dose of acetaminophen is the same in this series. In Australia, and some other countries the medicine is known as Panadeine.

Tylenol 3

Tylenol is available in a number of different formulations. It is sometimes mistakenly called a brand name for acetaminophen, but the point is that Tylenol can be a compound medication that consists of several substances, and acetaminophen is one of them. E.g., what is Tylenol 3? It is a compound analgetic that consists of 30 mg codeine phosphate and 300 mg acetaminophen. Of course, we cannot call Tylenol 3 a brand name for acetaminophen as it contains codeine, too.
